Back Pain Treatment – Ultrasound Therapy
Posted on February 18th, 2009 1 commentUltrasound therapy is being used more and more as a back pain treatment with some promising results. This back pain treatment technique uses very highly pitched sound waves that cannot be heard by the human ear. These waves are thought to have a micro-massaging effect, as the sound waves pass through the tissues. (This brings more blood to the area, which is helpful during healing.)
One patient I know said this: ‘I visit an osteopath every 4 or 5 weeks who is qualified to apply acupuncture and ultrasound – I had an accident about 5 years ago, when I apparently damaged about four-fifths of my lower back, and so was keen to find some back pain relief pretty quickly. Following the initial pain and subsequent treatment (mainly ultrasound), I had no more problems until about 2 years ago.’
In a recent US survey, 62 per cent found ultrasound completely ineffective. UK survey respondents reacted more positively. However, according to international guidelines, there is little evidence to support the use of ultrasound in treating mechanical or non-specific low back pain.

Yep. I don’t know why my searches seem to keep landing me on this site . . . but I would be part of that 62%. I had a physical therapist use ultrasound on me several years back.
If it did me any good, I couldn’t tell. I’ve had back pain almost 4 decades now.
My sister is an acupuncturist in Oregon and used to be a massage therapist. Now both of those have helped me, and many other things, but not ultrasound.
