Based on my experience with this muscle pain when breathing deeply, I recommend getting a deep massage in the shoulder blade muscles. That really loosens things up. When you breathe deeply, you are using muscles. Naturally those muscles will interact with other muscles, which are in your case inflamed, causing pain. I have the same thing. Massage helps. If it doesnt help for you, maybe it is something else. But dont get yourself all worried about it. There are so many muscles in your body doing so many different things. Unusual movements, even if you didnt injure yourself or notice at the time it was unusual, could cause muscle aches and pain.

It has to be a muscle pull or pinched nerve. It is very painfull

I have been having pain underneath my right shoulder blade. Whenever I breath, yawn or sneeze it hurts. It's almost like when I yawn or breathe deeply I can't breath to my full extent.

I don't have health insurance they say I make too much money or whatever...I guess 40 hrs a week in a min. wage job is too much. whatever.

Anyway, I am going to the doctor anyway because I have been having it for almost a year and it is hard for me to even lay on my back flat because of the pain. I tried getting a massage...nothing. Sometimes it is a weird sort of pleasure when I stretch it just because it is pulling on it and makes me feel better about it. I don't know. Nothing seems to help.

No sweats or fever. So I don't know

I have only began having these symptoms. I do have other medical conditions such as emphysema but have never had this pain before. It gets better for a day or so and then gets excruciating for a while. Im scared and cant afford meds.

It is a sad truth that at times surgery is necessary. Something to think about though. After a fusion, the change in the motion pattern of the area creates a predisposition for disc failure in adjacent levels.

Follow up for a fusion should be life long. It must include strength, balance and flexibility.

Have a chiropractor on your health care team is also a must. Chiropractic adjustments are specific enough positively affect the areas around the surgery without damaging the area of fusion.

I read a quote recently that said "I feel just like I did at 25, as long as I don't try to do what I did at 25. Your article (which was great) made me think of those words.

Joint pain seems to be the price we pay as we grow older. Some pain probably can't be avoided. However, a good program of care can minimize discomfort and generally improve the quality of life.

As you stated, the causes for joint pain (arthralgia) are many. One of the most disconcerting things is it doesn't have to be caused by an injury right around the area being affected. The body is a complicated kinetic chain and injuries in one area have to potential for creating symptoms in seemingly unrelated regions.

Any approach to relieving the pain of arthalgia must include a full biomechanical assessment as well as life style changes to enhance the quality of the patient's health. Attention must also be given to underlying medical conditions and their contribution to the pain.

Making healthy changes is always a good idea but doing them without addressing the health issues is an approach doomed to failure.

A good chiropractor will look at most back pain in just this way. Not only can they provide relief, they also can help guide the patient in developing the appropriate healthy habits

True that the cause of joint pain is important in considering a treatment protocal. However a healthy lifestyle is the most imporatnt factor in prevention. Staying healthy costs less and has few side effects.

Hi Dan. I totally agree that spinal fusion should be the last resort, only if nothing else works. But, if there are no other alternatives and the chances of success are good, at least it's a viable option for people suffering with this debilitating pain.

Good article, and informative. Thanks!

I have had that dull pain below my shoulder blade whenever I yawn for about a day now. I have Afib so I have to be careful. I just took a nice hot bath, and shower (and breathed in the steam for my lungs) and have noticed that the pain is gone. ???? They say that a heart attack for a woman usually starts with a dull pain in the back, so I was kind of nervous about this. I watched for sweats and palpitations that never came, so maybe I am ok. But.. I deffinately am going to let my cardio Know about this experience.

The pain from yawning or breathing deeply - if it's between your spine and shoulder blade and if it came on due to exercise or physical activity related to raising weight laterally with your shoulder it's probably a rhombus strain.

I have that come on when i do shrugs with weight that's too heavy or when i do lateral raises or rear-delt exercises - again with weight that's too heavy.

Treatments I've employed include rest and heat&ice and anti-inflammatories regularly for a week or two. don't stretch for a few days.

Good stretches to do after include standard neck exercises moving the head away from the injured side and pulling your injured-side arm across your body and pulling on it comfortably.

can't speak from a medical perspective so if you have any previously existing ailments that have similar symptoms or symptoms that have escalated as a result of this you should definitely see a doctor.

Cheers!

Treatments I’ve employed include rest and heat&ice and anti-inflammatories regularly for a week or two. don’t stretch for a few days.

Good stretches to do after include standard neck exercises moving the head away from the injured side and pulling your injured-side arm across your body and pulling on it comfortably.

can’t speak from a medical perspective so if you have any previously existing ailments that have similar symptoms or symptoms that have escalated as a result of this you should definitely see a doctor.

Cheers!

There is an emerging cure for osteoarthritis and is available in china. It does not involve knee replacement surgery, but rather involves the re-growth of medial as well as articular cartilage. The process can replace lost cartilage within about 12-14 months. It can be done on an outpatient basis and has few risks. It is costly though, but considering one can return to a full and healthy lifestyle, it is worth it.
