Does the epidural and cortisol shot work effectively for back pain?

My mother in law has a herniated disc in her lower back and her pain doc wants her to get cortisol shots and epidural for treatment how effective are they based on your personal experience or knowledge of this treatment. i personally have allot of clients say it either doesn’t work or it work for very little time not worth the money but what do u say and any other suggestions will be very helpful.
